USA Strike Wave 1945 - 1946 Coal & Railroad strike
Car, Coal and Train strikes hit the nation.
The strike wave of 1945-1946 (also called the great strike wave of 1946) was a series of massive post-war labor strikes from 1945 to 1946 spanning numerous industries and public utilities. In the year after V-J Day, more than five million American workers were involved in strikes, which lasted on average four times longer than those during the war. They were the largest strikes in American labor history.
Throughout the Second World War, the National War Labor Board gave trade unions the responsibility for maintaining labor discipline in exchange for closed membership. This led to acquiescence on the part of labor leaders to businesses and various wildcat strikes on the part of the workers.
Often the strikes were against work discipline.
In a study done by Jerome F. Scott and George C. Homans of 118 strikes in Detroit from 1944-45, only four were for wages, the rest were for discipline, company policies or firings. After the war, wages fell across the board, leading to large strikes.
Strikes in 1945 included:
10,500 film crew workers (March 1945)
43,000 oil workers (October 1945)
225,000 United Auto Workers (November 1945)
In 1946, strikes increased:
174,000 electric workers (January 1946)
93,000 meatpackers (January 1946)
750,000 steel workers (January 1946)
340,000 coal miners (April 1946)
250,000 railroad engineers and trainmen nationwide (May 1946)
120,000 miners, rail and steel workers in the Pittsburgh region. (December 1946)
Others included strikes of railroad workers and ''general strikes in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Stamford, Connecticut; Rochester, New York; and Oakland, California. In total, 4.3 million workers participated in the strikes. According to Jeremy Brecher, they were "the closest thing to a national general strike of industry in the twentieth century."
In 1947, Congress responded to the strike wave by passing, over President Truman's veto, the Taft-Hartley Act, restricting the powers and activities of labor unions.
The act is still in force as of 2016 (..).
''The 1946 coal strike is the most momentous event in the country's peacetime history." - Evansville Courier, 1946
When most people think of labor unrest in America they think of the 1930's, or the various major strikes of the 19th Century. The fact is that no year, before or since, saw so many strikes, and such a large percentage of people on strike, or so many industries effected by strikes, as 1946.
Never before had labor unions flexed so much muscle.

“Word Has Just Been Received”: Truman Speaks on the Railroad Strike
Unions that continued to press beyond the general labor settlements established in the auto and steel industries after World War II found themselves facing an additional and powerful adversary-the federal government. In the spring of 1946, both coal miners and railroad workers staged nationwide strikes. President Harry Truman decided that the unions had gone too far, and after the railroad workers rejected a settlement, he seized control of the railroads. Despite the government takeover, the workers continued with their strike plans. As a result, on May 24, 1946, Truman issued an ultimatum declaring that the government would operate the railroads and use the army as strikebreakers. When the deadline passed, Truman went before Congress to seek the power to deny seniority rights to strikers and to draft strikers into the armed forces. Just as Truman reached the climax of his speech, he received a note saying that the strike was “settled on the terms proposed by the President.” After the congressional cheers died down, Truman proceeded with his prepared text.

Capitalism vs Socialism - the manipulative red danger
Переглядів 1,8 тис.5 років тому
The main difference between capitalism and socialism is the extent of government intervention in the economy. The United States, for instance, is usually considered a prime example of a capitalist country. Sweden is often considered a strong example of a socialist society. Sweden is not socialist, however, in the true sense of the word. In practice, most countries have mixed economies with econ...

Some people look at this video, and want to feel warm and comfort. Well, just like the people that made the film in 1961, it was full of bullshit then, as it is today. I was born and raised in Detroit. In fact, I am still here looking at it everyday. I am White and I have never felt safe or warm and comfort in my city or my State. I do not know what all of you see when you view that film. But me, I see White Supremacist propaganda. Because in 1961, the White Supremacist like Mayor Cobo, was practicing Jim Crow all through Detroit and Wayne County. Black Americans in 1961, could not even rent a hotel room at the downtown Detroit Hilton hotel. There were areas in Detroit that was "Red Lined" to death for persons of color. Do any of you persons know, that Blacks were not allowed to move on to the west side of Detroit until 1953. Yes March 1953. And was allowed to do that because Whites who wanted to relocate to the suburbs, needed to sell their homes in Detroit. So that Allem Park, Lincoln Park, and areas in Dearborn could be open up. Areas like Utica, East Detroit, could expand. So go back and watch the video again, and see if you see any Black Families having a good time out on the town, and seeing the sights. No, none..., because it was all Jim Crow. Detroit is down on its luck. And it is not because of Black America. It's because of White America. During the War and after, there was a huge financial boom in Michigan. Billions of dollars flowed in. But the Blacks were box out of the money well. And the money went to the White Elites, and the millions of Southern Whites that came to Michigan to make their money and leave rich. The Blacks got "Nothing". When the car market, the electronic market, and medical equipment market, became flooded with overseas items from Asia. All the persons with money left Michigan. They all got not, and went to Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada. They invested and built up those areas to make more money. Michigan and Detroit is in the state it is in, because those people ran off with the damn money. Billions. The Blacks had no money to invest, because the Whites box them out of it, for 30 years. Those few Blacks with 3, 4, or even 5 million dollars was not going to bring Detroit back. The White Elites ran off with 132 billion dollars in cash and assets. You guys knows nothing. Do not believe the Republican or the Racist bullshit tales. They are all lies.

The movie named Who framed Roger Rabbit got me excited about the trolleys and especially those trams of the late Pacific Electric Railway (although in real life they weren’t exactly like that in the movie because they were more like train than buses like that though some probably ran that way in the middle of the highway) and maybe just that as those kids and Eddie sat on the wide rear bumper of that tram. I would like to tell you, especially as a Finnish representative, that if I were a multi-billionaire with huge assets like Elon Musk, for example, I would travel to Los Angeles with the person in charge of these deceased companies and buy the traffic and copyrights of Pacific Electric Railway to I could rebuild, repair and thus reopen it, thus bringing back the former "best public transport in the world" back to Los Angeles and bringing it to my home country of Finland, to further improve our public transport even though it is actually the best in the world at the moment, education, health and equality in addition. And I'll set it up so that the trams will be exactly the same as in this movie: similar in shape, size and design, albeit a bit more modern, with wide front and rear bumpers so that kids and adults like the kids and Eddie in that movie can themselves pick up and sit there. on top of them and travel, travel on trolleys in this way for free, and they drive on the rails embedded in the middle of the highway as seen in the film, although the trams also have to be built back, you can buy a ticket on the spot from the ticket seller like Eddie did (pay for it either in cash or by card and I promise the price is nickel) or some kind of Pacific Electric app created for checking schedules and buying a ticket with a smartphone and terminal stations like in a movie, i.e. includes a waiting room and a bar, restaurant, though I'm going to set them up e so that children may also visit them, where snacks, coca-cola and other soft drinks and other delicacies are sold to children and teenagers where restaurant food and beer are sold to adults. And I would invest both millions and billions of dollars and euros in the company's cash and cash equivalents on both the American and Finnish sides so that it would not have to be sold in cash to any company for financial difficulties, at least not immediately or at all if the money is kept as emergency and spent reasonably not almost any of them actually go away. And before my death or possible resignation, I would make sure that the company is never, for whatever reason, or no matter how good the offers made by other companies, sold to any other company or entity so as not to be abused or liquidated again for one reason or another. don't get to repeat yourself. That if I got the Pavific Electric Railway, even after it was liquidated, I would bring it to life, bring it back to the world map and inspired by the film alone :)

I was there, and it was sort of as depicted, if you were white. But this video is about a time only a few years before political, economic, and police oppression of the inner city black community led to the explosive riots which substantially increased white flight out of Detroit, and ultimately led to the death of Detroit. All of the elements which led to that were already in play in the time depicted by this video, but they are nowhere to be seen in it. So in that sense, this video is false nostalgia.
